A dream come true

This friday i'm off to Switzerland and the Montreux Jazz Festival to see some of my favourite artists! Starting of saturday with Gilberto Gill, Mark Ronson and Jill Scott. Sunday is the main night with Jamie Lidell, Ch Ch Chaka Khan and the father of fusion Herbie Hancock! Monday i'm gonna walk around, drink alot of swiss beer and try to get some nice pictures. Thuesday is my last day and it's all dedicated to Joe Sample & The Crusaders.

I can't really express how much i'm looking forward to this. This will be one of the most important events of my life, no doubt!

Resurrection of real

Artist: The Afeeliated
Album: The Threshold Session EP
Link: myspace.com/theafeeliated
Download: The Afeeliated - My Man

This is one of the best hip-hop sounds i have heard in a long time. Beatmaker Bishops beats are so genuine and close to early '90s hip-hop sound that it gives me the creeps... He's definitely the number one scandinavian beatmaker at the moment. If you like Pete Rock & CL Smooth, The Pharcyde or some of the early Common albums, you're gonna love this!

Good things!

Some of you may have experienced that this site i really slow to load and navigate. Last week i ordered 20GB of server space at a new and faster provider. So as soon as the transfer is done the site will be fast as lightning!

I have also removed the portfolio for now, i'll put i back up when i get the time to fill it up with juicy pics and new graphics!

Btw, i just have to mention the song that have been spinning in my head the last week: Seelenluft - Manila. Nana nana na na nana...

The waiting is over

Artist: The Herbaliser
Album: Same As It Never Was
Link: myspace.com/theherbz

I have been waiting a long time for my two favourite producers/musicmakers, Jake Wherry and Ollie Teeba to return with their devine collaboration, The Herbaliser. This time around it's less hip-hop and more soul, funk and library inspired. As always, a great album!

They are actually the reason why i got the Ninja Tune logo tattooed on my right arm...

Portfolio...

I'm currently working on my new portfolio site. Since it is Flash and XML powered it will be much easier for me to update than my previous portfolios. I can feel that my Flash skills have been weakened, i'm using the Help menu more than the Actions menu....

I really need to debug it, so if you want to try out the beta, send me a mail (See About) and i'll will provide you with a username and a password.

Lisbon flicks

I have added more pictures to my Flickr. Not so many from Offf since i spent two days in bed (still bitter...), but some others from here and there.

I must say i'm quite pleased with my little set of pictures from one of the restaurants we visited. Delfim is probably one of the nicest restaurant experiences i've ever had! The food was delicious and the service was exellent. If you're planing to visit Lisbon i recommend you to give it a try!

Smooth blend

Artist: Quiet Village
Album: Silent Movie
Link: myspace.com/quietvillage
Download: Quiet Village - Circus of Horror [Pitchfork]

Oh my, what a fresh breeze! A well produced and smooth blend of '70s dark soul, hip-hop beats and catchy vocal lines. This actually reminds me of something RZA could have produced, or something he could have chosen for a kung fu/western movie soundtrack. Or as they self call it, 'Sophisticated Exotica for Adults'...

I just updated my Flickr with pictures from my trip to Lisbon. I'll upload more as soon as i get them converted.

By the way, big thanks to NewWebPick, SJ63 and Straightline for the recognition, thank you guys!

A lil' bit of OFFF

I had been looking forward to this trip for a long time, and when i'm finally got there and where ready to be bombarded with ideas and inspiration, i managed to catch the flu... So the two best days at Offf i spent in bed struggling with the AC and watching daytime tv. But i managed to get some inspiration from FoxLifes new idents and some interior tips from Extreme Makeover Home Edition.

I know i have to go back to Lisbon, because the things i did experience was amazing! The food, the wine, the architecture, the people, everything! Check out my Flickr for photos!

I'm off to Offf!

Tomorrow i'm going to Lisbon to attend the biggest festival for graphic/motion/interactive design, OFFF.

This is my first time so i have built up an enormous expectation to the presentations and workshops! Some of the names: Joshua Davis, Scott Hansen (ISO50), Group 94, fakepilot, hi-res! and many many more!

Check back for photos and gossip from the festival!

Nodebox
30. April 2008

Visual programming

I just came across a very neat application called Nodebox. "Nodebox lets you create 2D visuals (static, animated or interactive) using Python programming code and export them as a PDF or a QuickTime movie."

For some of you this is probably old news, but for those of you who haven'nt tried it click here!

The picture to the left and the one beneath is made using Nodebox.

Olympus
29. April 2008

Nostalgic times

After two years of digital photography i found out that i had to go back to my roots and get my old analog Olympus OM10 out from the basement.

Oh man, we have it so much easier now a days with digital light measuring, instant preview and auto focus than back in the days.

I will post some of the photos here or on my Flickr as soon as i get them digitalized!

Flickr updated

I updated my Flickr yesterday with some new pictures taken one beautiful afternoon in Oslo.

All the pictures are taken with my new lens, a Canon EF 50mm f/1.8. It's must be some of the best buys ever! You can get it for as low as 180 USD!

Exchange Bureau
20. April 2008

Fusion reinvented

Artist: Exchange Bureau
Album: Particularly Handsome
Link: myspace.com/exchangebureau

I really don't know much about this band or the people behind it, but i wish i had been introduced a long time ago.

There is no easy way to describe this band, so as usual i have to do it with my own comparison, here goes: Kenny Dope and Little Louie on vacation with Mr Oizo, sippin' mojitos while listening to Nick Holder on the decks. This album is gonna make my summer!

Tingsek
16. April 2008

Third from Tingsek

Artist: Tingsek
Album: Too Many Feelings At The Same Time
Label: Universal Music

Magnus Tingsek is back with his third studio album, and he keeps up his trend of making better and better albums.

Too Many Feelings At The Same Time is more danceable and a more funky than his previous albums. He has brought in more strings and more electronic sounds that gives it a more uplifting sound. You Amaze Me is a favourite!

The Bank Job
14. April 2008

A beautiful job

This morning i came across one of the most beautiful movie poster i've seen since the poster from the original 'The Italian Job' starring Michael Caine from 1969.

Brilliant photo and art direction by Jack English and Phil Harvey. They have done a great job capturing the essences from 1960's styles in photo and typography.

Check it out!

Form Over Function
10. April 2008

Personal projects

I've received several requests from various people asking me why i don't publish my projects here. Well the answer is that i have'nt had time to find a satisfying way presenting them.

The other thing is that I don't have the time to do som much work beside my fulltime job.

So from now on when i make some cool graphics or take some nice pictures, i'll publish them immediately! :)

Bolda by Morten Iveland
8. April 2008

The birth of Bolda

I'm currently working on a new font, 'Bolda'. I have worked on it for quite some time now and i'm starting to feel that i'm never gonna finish... a very normal feeling when you're designing a font... The last time i made a costum font was almost three years ago, i have totallty forgot how much work it was.

But now i'am gonna step it up a notch and finish it before the end of the month!

I'll keep ya'll updated! In the meantime, see 'Bolda' in use!

Spring time
5. April 2008

Spring is here

Here's some album recommendations for you guys who have'nt felt the scent of spring yet:

VA - Nightmares On Wax Presents Wax On Records

A beautiful mix of beats, trip-hop and downtempo rarities, compiled by George Evelyn.

VA - Nigeria Funk Disco Spesial

A cool compilation, more funk than disco. Basically drums and guitar based straight-forward-funk tracks flavoured with some catchy vocal lines. Saturday Night Fish Fry Funkin'!

The Cinematic Orchestra - Live at Royal Albert Hall

For those lazy and warm summer evenings, best accompanied by a icecold bottle of sparkling bubbles.

Barrington Levy - Englishman

A classic! One of best reggae albums ever made! Every song is gonna stick on your mind like Macarena. Dum di dum pon di mind!
Jamie Lidell
5. April 2008

A Motown heritage

Artist: Jamie Lidell
Album: Jim
Label: Warp

Three years after his highly acclaimed album, "Multiply" Jamie Lidell is back with an impressive sequel. This time around it's less the crossover and a more purified Motown sound .

The first comparison that pops into my mind is: Otis at a party with Curtis where they're listening to Archie Bell, dancing with Bohannon and drinking with Jimi Tenor.

Easter
25. March 2008

Easter holiday

I just returned from Bodø, my hometown, where i spent my easter holiday. After a periode of heavy workload and alot of stress, a week of R&R got my shoulders in place and my head straight. It has been a long time since the last time i where there this time of year, the color combinations and the contrasts are amazing!

During my stay a took alot of pictures, i'll add them to my Flickr as soon as i get them out of my camera.

Mr Benidorm '79
3. March 2008

Mr Benidorm '79

After too many months of musical celibacy i've finally bought myself some new speakers and made a new song!

Since this song differs so much from my earlier tracks i decided to release it under a new alias; Mr Benidorm '79.
Don't ask...

Make sure to check it out at Last.fm

Christian Prommer
6. February 2008

A drumlesson...

Artist: Christian Prommers Drumlesson
Album: Drum Lesson Vol. 1
Label: Sonar Kollektiv

Could you ever imagine the best house/dance songs from the last two decades reinterpreted as sophisticated jazz? Me neither. Christian Prommer captures jazz fans as well as hardcore techno heads. A brilliant record.

Make sure you check out the stunning versions of Derrick Mays "Strings Of Life" and Jaydees "Plastic Dreams".

Morteiveland v.4
6. February 2008

Morteniveland v.4

After trying various designs and platforms, i've finally made up my mind and published morteniveland.net v.4!

I said goodbye to 100% Flash, welcomed xhtml and css spiced up with some Javascript and entered the world of blogging. It'll be much easier to update from now on, so my only excuse for not updating is lazyness... God forbid...

Hope you will enjoy!

Papermaster
5. February 2008

Papermaster

After two years of hard considering i finally took the step and bought myself the beautiful Papermaster. It's designed by the highly skilled Torbjørn Anderssen at NorwaySays.

A truly masterpiece...

Auschwitz
28. January 2008

Trip to Krakow

This christmas holiday me and some friends went to Krakow, Poland to celebrate New Year's Eve. Ain't no party like a polish party... They really know how to celebrate, a lot of cheap booze mixed with some sketchy fireworks!

We also visited the largest of the ww2 German concentration camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau. It's one of the toughest things i've ever experienced... I recommend everyone to go and see it!
